Living in these modern times is hectic. We are constantly bombarded with multiple pressures, constant stimulus and a seemingly never-ending ‘to-do’ list.
Not only is there a societal expectation for women to be superwomen extraordinaire (and of course this is an expectation we put on ourselves), we are also required to look a particular way. With the rise of social media and the constant, yet unrealistic portrayal of the so-called ‘perfect female body’, we are reminded on a daily basis of our supposed ‘flaws’.
These issues combined lead to what I call the Modern Women’s Dis-ease. We are facing issues and obstacles that our forewoman never had to face, and as a result we are running into some big problems.
These problems can be seen in the rise of body-dissatisfaction, yo-yo dieting, disordered eating behaviors, eating disorders, obesity, low self esteem, exercise abuse, stress, health issues and a chronic lack of body love.
In an age where we have access to more information and knowledge than at any point in history there is a chronic lack of commonsense and wisdom, and as such more and more people are left feeling confused, overwhelmed and stuck. Particularly when it comes to their body shape and health.
The first place to start when trying to alleviate Modern Women’s Dis-ease is to initiate a whole-istic approach (spelling error intended) to your health and wellbeing. Everything in your body is connected – your mind, body and spirit, and whilst we have been convinced to deal with them as separate entities they are entwined.
Your food choices, the amount of quality sleep you get, your stress levels, and the type of exercise you do all effect how you feel about yourself, and the reverse is also true. How you feel about yourself influences your food choices, your sleep, stress levels and whether you exercise or not and your overall health.
By paying specific attention to, and purposefully improving lifestyle factors such as the quality of your relationships, your environment, the type of information you ingest, stress reduction, your food and exercise choices and most importantly your thoughts, you can start to move away from the dis-ease state.
Remember good health is not just about the number of calories you eat or the amount of exercise you do; great health is about fostering both psychological and physical nourishment that allows you to thrive.
